This clutch job is on a 2 wheel drive pickup truck, Ford F250 with the power stroke diesel. A 4x4 would require more work as it would also have a transfer case that the 2 wheel drives do not have. But this one is a 2 wheel drive so its not as hard as it could be.

BELOW: We have already disconnected the transmission and lowered it from the truck so we could get to the clutch.

ABOVE: You can see the transmission below the pickup on the transmission jack waiting to go back into the pickup after the clutch is affordably replaced.

BELOW: Before we could disconnect and remove the transmission, we had to remove the gear shifter inside the cab of the truck.

We also had to remove the exhaust system that was wrapped around the standard transmission on this F250 Diesel, two wheel drive just so we could even get to the clutch for its repairs and parts replacements.

This is a standard transmission, 5 speed with overdrive just for Fords power stroke diesel. This thing is huge. Its made for pulling lots of weight and they are nearly bullet proof. They typically last forever.

In front of the standard transmission you can see the old worn out flywheel on the back of the power stroke motor.

You can see the discoloration upon the flywheels surface and the scratches on it. This means the bad clutch created too much heat and overheated the flywheel. Over heating a fly wheel causes two problems.

1. It can warp and lose its perfectly flat surface which will create problems after the new clutch disk is installed.

2. Also the heat can create invisible cracks in the flywheel and then they would cause future clutch problems. So this flywheel must be replaced with a new one in order to guarantee perfect operation of the new clutch.

ABOVE you can see the old worn out flywheel and below you can see the new replacement flywheel.

Below you can see the worn out pressure plate on the left and the broken worn out clutch disk on the right. Notice the missing clutch material from the clutch disk?

Now we want to mount the new flywheel to the back of the diesel engines crankshaft where the red arrow is pointing. But 1st we will install a new pilot bearing into the rear of the crankshaft.

In the box you can see the new pressure plate and the new throw out bearing in the upper right corner.

Below we have sat the flywheel upon a stool. Atop of the flywheel we have set the new clutch disk although its not yet perfectly aligned/centered. That will come after the flywheel is installed on the rear of the engines crankshaft.

BELOW: We have now flipped the clutch disk upside down and placed it on top of the pressure plate. The clutch disk will spend its working life sandwiched between the flywheel and pressure plate.

We use a special alignment rod when we are sandwiching them together so the clutch disk will be perfectly centered when its all bolted in. That's the black rod in the center with the black ring atop of it.

BELOW: All three are now sandwiched for picture purposes. It makes the clutch disk nearly invisible when its sitting between the flywheel and pressure plate. The pressure plate is on top. You can see all the fingers aiming inwards toward the center where the throw out bearing will push against it when your disengaging your clutch to come to a stop.

When the clutch is disengaged engine power is NOT any longer being transmitted to the transmission.,

Now you can see the throw out bearing sitting atop of the fingers of the pressure plate for picture purposes here.

The truck has to be high enough so our mechanic does not hit his head while working. So this now places the top of the flywheel above his head so he must stand on mini step ladder to reach.

He has the flywheel mounted to the rear of the crankshaft and he is now inserting the bolts that will hold them together.

Now he is tightening the bolts only snug with the air impact wrench. After they are all snug he will torque them very precisely to an exact tightness that Ford says is the best for longevity purposes.

Now he is torque-ing them with precision with that torque wrench in his right hand. When he reaches the exact tightness the torque wrench will click loudly and audibly so he knows to stop there. And he will feel that click in the wrench so there is no doubt.

Once the flywheel is properly bolted in place, now he is mounting the clutch disk with the alignment tool so he can later mount the pressure plate. That alignment tool centers the clutch disk in the exact dead center of the flywheel. There is no room for error here.

ABOVE: Out side the clutch disk you can see small holes in the flywheels perimeter. This is because the pressure plate has locator studs built into it and these studs will fit tightly and perfectly into these holes on the outer flywheels surface. This helps guarantee an exact centered fit.

BELOW: He is now mounting the pressure plate onto the trapped clutch disk that is sitting on the flywheel. This is where they truly become sandwiched as a single functioning unit.

He is now starting to insert the bolts which will hold the pressure plate permanently mounted to the rear of the engines flywheel. As he adds more bolts he will correct the centering aspect.

Ok now the bolts are being inserted through the pressure plate into the rear of the flywheel with the clutch disk trapped between them.

Now the pressure plate is bolted onto the flywheel. If you look carefully in the center, you can see the alignment tool still in place as it held the clutch disk perfectly centered for this installation.

The front of the transmission has a splined shaft which must fit through the clutch disk and into the pilot bearing mounted in the rear of the engines crank shaft. This must be a perfectly centered fit or the transmission shaft will not go in far enough.

Now he is tightening the pressure plate bolts so he can later torque them to proper specifications.

BELOW: He is now applying the exact amount of torque to the bolts so its not too much nor too little. It must be precise. That's why he is using a special torque wrench.

All done. A view looking at it from the rear, and looking up at it from below it.

Now after he removes the alignment tool, he can slide forward and raise the transmission and re-mount it to the rear of this Ford diesel engine.

Then he still has lots of little things to still hook up, but the overall clutch replacement job is complete on this pickup truck done very affordably here in Deland, Fl.
